Message from the President:

HOCKEY AS USUAL FOR THE 2010-11 SEASON

This note is intended to clear up some incorrect information and/or rumours that have been floating around our community. Rest assured that Coronation Minor Hockey will be fully operational for the 2010-2011 hockey season. All of our programs that we have offered in the past will be available this season. The only change is that our season will, temporarily, be relocated to Eastwood. We have been informed by the City that the relocation could be as short as 2 weeks and at the most 10 weeks. Our time slots will stay relatively the same with the exception of a few weeknight hours being moved around. This relocation is to allow the City to complete some much needed upgrades to our cooling system in the arena in conjunction with a new pool. As soon as the work on the compressors is completed, which will allow the ice to be installed, we can return to our arena. In the meantime please spread the word that it is “business as usual” with Coronation Minor Hockey Association. Please return to the website for any updates on this situation as we will keep you posted of any changes.

Please feel free to e-mail me should you have any questions regarding this or any other concerns.

Thank You,
John Paxton

House-League Teams Make Coronation Proud at the City Playdowns

Another successful House League season has come t
o an end and many thanks go to the coaches, trainers, managers, sponsors and parents for making this such a successful season for all those players involved.

In early April, several teams represented Coronation in the City Playdowns tournament and further success was achieved there. Though having to juggle House League and Select committments that were in conflict this year, Coronation was well represented and proved that once again, Coronation is 'the little association that could'. Our Atom team made it to the Quarter-Finals, our Novice and PeeWee teams made it to the Semi-Finals and our veterans, the Juveniles, and perennial favourites to bring home the glory, successfully brought home the Championship hardware. Congratulations to all those coaches, players and parents involved in the tournament.

Select Teams Represent Coronation with Pride

The Select programme for the 2009-10 season cam to end in early April with several year-end tournaments including the representation at the Pepsi tournament in Buffalo and the Alliance Championships in St. Catherines
.

The Novice team fought hard all season long making it to the final of the Chedoke Christmas tournament before falling 3-0 to the home team in that game. A similar outcome befell the team in Brantford in January where the team again made it all the way to final before meeting a determined Lawfield team in the final and ending up on the losing side of a close 2-1 game. The team finished the season sharing the weekend in Buffalo at the Pepsi Tournament with the Atom and PeeWee teams. An excellent way to end a great season and a wonderful time was had by all the kids.

The Atom select team steadily improved as the season progressed. The team started the season slowly and struggled to score early on though they narrowly missed making the semi-finals in the Chedoke Christmas Tournament. The team then found their stride and put in an excellent effort at the Pepsi Tournament in Buffalo in early April making it to the final where they were narrowly defeated by an AE (dedicated travel team) team from Milton. The team finished the season with another fantastic effort at the Alliance Championships making it to the semi-finals before being eliminated by a very strong Major Atom team from Waterloo that eventually won the tournament. This was a great year for the kids on this team and an excellent opportunity for the kids to really see the benefits of working as a team.

The PeeWee team got out of the gate quickly and never let up. The team entered four tournaments this season and ended up playing in the championship game in all but one. The team lost a hotly contested final game in the Chedoke Christmas Tournament 1-0, but followed this up with a 1-0 final game vistory in the Dofasco Tournament in February. The team didn't let up and was again victorious in the Pepsi Tournament in Buffalo in early April. That game saw the team dominate a hard-hitting team from Stoney Creek, but the boys' skills simply out-matched the competition. The final tournament of the year proved to be an excellent test of the boys' perseverance. Conflicts with the Hamilton City Playdowns meant that the team was forced to play 5 players short for most of the games, but once again their skills and tenacity showed through with excellent efforts in all the games in St. Catherines.

The Bantam team struggled to find ways to win, but still had an excellent season. Starting the season at the Chedoke Christmas tournament and ending the season with a trip to the Alliance Championships in St Catherines, by all accounts it was a successful exercise for the kids involved.

Coronation Wins the Novice Division Oakridge Classic House League Tournament (Feb 21, 2010)

Congratulations are extended to Knowledge Tree, our Novice house-league team that travelled to London this past weekend to participate in the Oakridge Classic House League Tournament. The team fought hard, played well and came away with the hardware. Once we manage to pry the trophy out of their little hands, we'll make sure it receives a place of honour in the trophy case for all to enjoy! Well done everyone!

Select Teams Make Coronation Proud

Another successful Select season came
to an end on Easter weekend in St Catherines. Many thanks go to the coaches, trainers, managers, sponsors and parents for making this such a successful season for all those players involved.

The Novice team fought hard all season long though the scoreboard was not always their friend, nor were the draws they received in their tournaments. Nevertheless, the team successfully made it to the semi-final in their Christmas tournament. The team finished the season by narrowly missing the playoffs in both the Pepsi Tournament and at the Alliance Championships, but a great time was had by all the kids.

The Atom select team steadily improved as the season progressed. The team started the season by making the semi-final in the Chedoke Christmas Tournament. They followed this effort up by winning the Pepsi Tournament in Buffalo in early April and finished the season by losing only one game in the Alliance Championships before being eliminated based on the tie-breaker rules.

The PeeWee team got out of the gate quickly and never let up. The team entered three tournaments this season and ended up playing in the championship game in all three. The team didn't end up on the winning side in any of those games, but the score wasn't indicative of the team's effort.

The Bantam team had a successful season, starting the season with a fifth place finish at the Chedoke Chistmas Tournament narrowly missing the semi-final by 0.5 points. They ended the season with a trip to the final at the Pepsi Tournament in Buffalo where they played hard but were defeated by an AE team from Georgetown.

Alliance Proposal for restructuring Recreational House-Leagues into Major/Minor Divisions

Alliance Hockey along with some members of the HMHC have presented arguments for the Recreational House-Leagues to reorganise into a Major/Minor divisional structure. This means that CMHA would no longer have an Atom division for example but would have a Minor Atom division and a Major Atom division. For Coronation this would mean that on average each division would have 2 teams. A division of 2 teams isn't viable unless interlocked with one or more other centres. It should be noted that Coronation is not alone as there isn't any association in the city of Hamilton large enough to support a Major/Minor structure without interlocking. This proposal was discussed at the AGM (March 3rd, 2009) and the information provided to CMHA can be downloaded here.

Based on the discussion at the AGM and the arguments voiced against this proposal at the RHL table, Coronation is taking the position to oppose any restructuring at this time. The arguments in favour of restructuring include the assertion that children that play with other children the same age will be less intimidated. The Alliance also contends that skill development will be better in this structure. The CMHA Executive disputes both of these claims and does not believe that this proposal is good for skill development. Numerous arguments were discussed against the proposal including the need for travel, the loss of community, and the desire to preserve the traditions that are Coronation Minor Hockey. Please review the information supplied by the Alliance and if you wish to comment, please send your comments to John Copp. Your comments for and against will be compiled by the Executive to judge the views of our membership.

Spirit-Wear Announcement

Further to the previous Logo announcement, the CMHA membership should be made aware that only spirit-wear sold directly through the Association at the arena is sanctioned by CMHA. CMHA relies on these sales as a source of fundraising revenue. When local businesses sell items bearing the copyrighted CMHA Logo without permission the Association gains no benefit from those sales. No retail stores in Hamilton have been granted permission to reproduce our Logo for any purpose. Those stores that do are in violation of the Canadian Copyright Act. The Association has specifically asked Wentworth Sports to stop selling Coronation Bengals items, but those requests have been ignored. The Association would kindly ask that if you would like to purchase spirit-wear, you contact the Association and we will provide the items you are looking for.

Coronation Minor Hockey Association is pleased to announce the launch of its new 'Coronation Bengals Logo'. CMHA commissioned the work in the fall of 2006 and accepted the final design in the spring of 2008. Two years in development, the new logo represent a new unique look for CMHA. In addition, by acquiring all rights title and interest in and to the copyrighted logo, CMHA hopes to capitalise on fundraising opportunities by selling spirit-wear such as hoodies, T-shirts, hats and jackets.
